Making changes in life

A five step plan to make changes in your life

by David Leonhardt

Have you drifted off your path? When faced with a fork in the road of life, did you head down the wrong way? Perhaps you've put on weight. Or lost too much weight. Or chosen the wrong career. Or sunk into a depression, or just got stuck in a rut. Or maybe you just grew a beard you want to shave off.

Using my beard as an example, here is a five-step plan for making changes and getting back on your path. Don't forget also to check out my top five favorite goal-achievement programs below.

Rewind...back to when you were on the right path

Remember what it felt like, what you did, or how you looked. Savor it and set your goal.

That's me at the Eaton Centre in Toronto a few years ago.

Get ready to start making changes

Make your plan. In this case, my daughter had seen me with a beard for the most recent quarter of her life, so my plan was to have her see me shave it off and touch it along the way, so she would not be scared of the new furless me.

That's me and Lauralee getting ready to go.

Start working on making your changes

This step is kind of self-explanatory.

That's me hard at work, cutting through the undergrowth.

Celebrate milestones

Most projects are too big to do all at once. Set milestone objectives, so you can feel the success along the way. Making changes is hard enough, without feeling like you'll never get there. In this case, the milestone was a goatee.

That's me hamming it up for the camera with what's left of my beard.

Savor success

You will reach your goal if you keep at it. All you have to do is persist, to get up as many times as you fall down. And have plenty of extra blades on hand.

That's the new me looking suspiciously like the old me.

Making changes in life is never easy. Returning to a path you've left is probably even harder. Shaving off a beard is a piece of cake compared to really serious changes you might want to make. But it does serve as a light-hearted example.

Top 4 programs to reach your goals
